ABOUT

Dumitru Madarasan is a Romanian bass with a compelling stage presence and a diverse operatic repertoire. Between 2018 and 2020, he was a member of the prestigious Young Ensemble at Theater an der Wien in Vienna, Austria. During his time there, he performed a wide range of roles, including Duclou in Zazà (Leoncavallo), First Soldier and Fifth Jew in Salome (Strauss), the Chief of the Auspices in La Vestale (Spontini), Second Prisoner in Fidelio (Beethoven), Snug in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Britten), and Bass soloist in King Arthur (Purcell).At the Vienna Kammeroper, the second stage of Theater an der Wien, Dumitru took on leading roles such as Méphistophélès in Faust (Gounod), Philippe II in Verdi’s Don Carlos (French version), Coppelius in Les contes d’Hoffmann (Offenbach), Dr. Pangloss in Candide (Bernstein), Polidarte in Giustino (Handel), and Trincalo in The Enchanted Island (a Purcell pasticcio).In 2022, he made his debut at the Opéra de Lyon, singing Ceprano in Rigoletto and Reinmar von Zweter in Tannhäuser.Dumitru has worked with celebrated stage directors such as Christof Loy, Damiano Michieletto, Johannes Erath, Christoph Waltz, Sven-Eric Bechtolf, and Nikolaus Habjan, and collaborated with renowned conductors including Antonello Manacorda, Stefan Soltesz, Bertrand de Billy, Manfred Honeck, and Leo Hussain.He received his musical education at the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy in Cluj Napoca and the Art School in Targu Mures, Romania. He later continued his studies in Düsseldorf with Romana Noack and in Rimini with Alfio Grasso, and while based in Vienna, he worked regularly with vocal coaches Sherman Lowe and Kirsten Schötteldreier.Dumitru made his professional debut at the State Opera in Cluj as Antonio in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro and first appeared at Theater an der Wien in 2017 as Death in Viktor Ullmann’s Der Kaiser von Atlantis, a performance that led to his invitation to join the ensemble.

Dumitru Madarasan portrayed King Philippe II in the French version of Verdi’s Don Carlos at the Vienna Kammeroper. This complex and emotionally layered role allowed Dumitru to showcase his deep, resonant bass and expressive vocal color. His interpretation captured the king’s inner turmoil, authority, and loneliness, offering a powerful blend of vocal command and psychological nuance.
